Pickin' In Pahoa
February 1-4, 2007
In February, we all headed down to the Big Island for a hoe down in Pahoa. In addition to Spinach for Sale (our band), Steve Ryan of Fields of Fire (Big Island), the Happy Enchalatas (Kauai) and many other talented musicians gathered with at Dr. Glen Swartwout and Frank Swartwout 90 acres off-grid lavaland retreat, the Shire, in Pahoa.

The Main Structure. This open platform with sleeping areas at the top is the only permanent structure on the Shire. A rustic setting with no electric or water and lots of rain.

The Outhouse. Built over a burned out tree hollow. Basically, when the lava flowed it surrounded a tree, which burned up. What was left is a big hole. Cover it with an outhouse and that hole will slowly fill with... well, you get the idea.
