Haleakala, Maui (September 1-3, 2006)
DAY ONE
We embark from the Summit (at about 12,000) to Paliku, an 9.8 Mile Hike.
After decending a few thousand feet, we approach the crater floor.
I know its difficult to tell from the pictures, but my pack is approximately 40 pounds heavier than Gavin's.
A Silversword. These are endangered plants and found nowhere in the world other than Haleakala.
We finally decend to the floor. Less sand more dead looking grasses. Here we planned to lunch, but were overtaken by Yellow Jackets.
Nene. Nene are endangered Hawaiian Geese. There are about 600 Nene left on the Islands. I hear they taste like chicken.
We hunker down for the night. With 9.8 miles on our legs, mostly downhill and in the sand--my body weary.
